Dr. Jillianne Code is a heart transplant recipient and heart failure survivor, assistant professor at University of British Columbia, post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University, keynote speaker, blogger at "heart failure to HARVARD", and passionate promoter of patient and family centred care.

Dr. Code is the Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy, University of British Columbia. 

Before coming to the University of British Columbia, Jillianne was Assistant Professor of Educational Technology and Psychology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria (UVic; 2011-17), and a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Assessment and Learning Technologies (2010-11). Dr. Code’s area of research is focused on the role of agency within and across learning contexts, the design of immersive virtual environments for education and assessment, and measurement methods using learning analytics in educational research.

Dr. Code holds a Ph.D in Educational Psychology from Simon Fraser University where her dissertation research focused on the development and validation of a new instrument measuring agency for learning. Jillianne holds both a M.Ed in Educational Psychology with a specialization Instructional Technology and a B.Ed in Secondary Science and Art Education from the University of Alberta.

Dr. Code’s most recent research project, Assessment for Learning in Immersive Virtual Environments (ALIVE), supported by funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, explores how immersive virtual environments can be designed to assess and support middle school students’ STEM inquiry learning through formative feedback.

Dr. Code is the author of numerous peer reviewed articles, chapters and proceedings. Her most recent contributions include Assessment in immersive virtual environments: Cases for learning, of learning, and as learning (2017), Open badges in online learning environments: Peer feedback as an engagement intervention for promoting agency (2016), and Virtual and augmented reality as cognitive tools for learning (2016). Dr. Code was an editor of the first special issue on Massive Open Online Courses for the Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (2013), and has been recognized with Outstanding Paper Awards at the World Conference on Educational Media and Technology (2011, 2013, 2016), and the American Educational Research Association (2009).

Jillianne is the Co-founder and President of the HeartLife Foundation of Canada. As a heart failure survivor and heart transplant recipient, Jillianne is an active advocate for the inclusion of patients as partners in health care policy and research. Jillianne is Co-Chair of the oversight and advisory committee for Patient Voices Network, is a Patient Partner on the Shared Care Committee, senior patient advisor on Cardiac Services BC, and is public member on the Medical Services Commission for the Province of British Columbia.
